DRAG FOR KIDS

Drag for Kids is a workshop for kids (4-8 years old) that promotes acceptance, inclusiveness and a safe space for self-expression beyond the gender polarity or social stereotypes. An important target of the workshop is to open an empathetic discussion about social norms.

The workshop was organised by Paraskevi Damaskou aka Atossa (actress, psychologist and hyper drag queen) and four Athenian drag queens including Space, GingerEla, Vanessa Cardui and Kangela Tromokratisch.

Space Manifesto during the workshop presented her first puppet show. It is the story of a non binary freaky asteroid and an heteronormative planet that meet each other and decide to continue travelling together in space. It is a play regarding non binary identity and visibility, gender norms, acceptance and friendship.

More information:

The first version of the workshop was a collaboration with Antigoni Tsagaropoulou's Fluffy Library and Atopos CVC, which hosted the event.

The drag queens were trained in Attachment Theory principles by Paraskevi Damaskou, in order to be able to approach children in an empathetic way and the workshop was split in 3 parts:
On the first part, the queens did one performance each (lipsync, storytelling, puppetry). Secondly, there was an opportunity for children/parents to ask questions and the queens to describe what they do and talk about their personal journeys. The last part was interactive and the most fun, as everyone was invited to choose from a big variety of accessories, wigs and other props and create their own unique persona, which they were invited to present to the rest of the group. It was a roaring success for everyone involved and our goal is to make it a regular event, aiming at different age groups each time.
